ECG Interpretation Weekend
Real arrhythmia or artifact? Supraventricular or ventricular?
Two days to build one method for reading any ECG, with Kieran Borgeat, a board-certified cardiologist.
Key facts
January 30–31, 2027 · Bucharest, Romania, in person · Lecture-based, with ECG examples and case discussion · Certificate of attendance · €545 early bird, €665 standard (all taxes included)
About the weekend
A trace comes off the monitor. Is that a real arrhythmia, or an artifact? If the complexes are premature, do they start in the atria or the ventricles? If the rate is slow, which bradyarrhythmia is it, and what happens next?
Over two days, Kieran Borgeat gives you one systematic method for answering them and applies it rhythm by rhythm, from sinus rhythm and artifacts through bradyarrhythmias to supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Sunday closes with an interactive ECG case challenge that puts the whole approach together.
The weekend is a broad, clinically oriented overview. It gives you a practical framework and confidence with the presentations you are most likely to meet, rather than specialist depth. Teaching is lecture-based, with ECG examples and clinical case discussion where appropriate, and the case work connects ECG findings to basic investigation and management principles. There are no practical sessions: the work is reading and reasoning through ECGs.
What you will be able to do
By the end of the weekend, participants will be able to:
- Interpret a routine ECG with a repeatable, systematic method: heart rate, rhythm, axis, waveforms, and intervals, in the same order every time
- Distinguish common normal variants and artifacts from true arrhythmias, and recognize when an apparent arrhythmia is not real
- Recognize common bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias
- Differentiate supraventricular from ventricular ectopy in common clinical situations
- Link ECG findings to basic investigation and management decisions
Weekend at a glance
Day 1: Saturday, January 30, 2027
Building a
systematic approach
Bucharest, Romania
Saturday builds the method, then puts it to work on the slow rhythms.
- 9:00–10:30 — ECG
Fundamentals & a Systematic Approach.
Lead systems, heart rate, rhythm, axis, waveforms, and intervals: the framework you carry through every session that follows. - 11:00–12:30 — Sinus
Rhythms, Artifacts & Common ECG Pitfalls.
Normal variation, and how to recognize when an apparent arrhythmia is not real. - 13:30–15:00 — Bradyarrhythmias.
Sinus bradycardia, sinus arrest, AV block, and escape rhythms. - 15:30–17:00 — Bradyarrhythmia
Cases.
Interpretation, plus basic investigation and management principles.
Day 2: Sunday, January 31, 2027
Tachyarrhythmias
Bucharest, Romania
Sunday moves to the fast rhythms: first deciding where premature complexes come from, then working through supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias, and closing with an interactive case challenge.
- 9:00–10:30 — Premature
Complexes.
Supraventricular or ventricular? PACs, VPCs, and aberrancy. - 11:00–12:30 — Supraventricular
Tachyarrhythmias.
Atrial tachycardia, SVT, atrial flutter, and atrial fibrillation. - 13:30–15:00 — Ventricular
Arrhythmias.
VPCs, accelerated idioventricular rhythm, and ventricular tachycardia. - 15:30–17:00 — ECG
Case Challenge.
The complete weekend approach, applied together.
Is this weekend right for you?
This weekend is for veterinarians in clinical practice who want a strong, practical ECG framework: a method you can use on the next trace you see, and a clear sense of what to do with what it shows. It is also a solid foundation before moving into more advanced arrhythmia training.
ECG interpretation is also part of Module 1 of the Basic Cardiology Course, where it sits alongside cardiovascular fundamentals. This weekend is dedicated entirely to the ECG. For clinicians who later want to go further, the Advanced Cardiology Masterclass includes an advanced ECG and arrhythmias weekend.
Faculty
Kieran Borgeat, BSc BVSc MVetMed CertVC FHEA FRCVS DipACVIM DipECVIM-CA (Cardiology)
RCVS Recognized Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology
You learn rhythm interpretation from a cardiologist who is board-certified by both the American and the European colleges, is Head of Service at Bristol Vet Specialists, and has published on arrhythmias.
Kieran Borgeat is a Diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology). He is Head of Service at Bristol Vet Specialists in the UK, and he has led the UK mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (mTEER) program, a collaboration between his hospital and the Royal Veterinary College in London.
He has published across feline cardiomyopathy, interventional surgery, and arrhythmias, the subject of this weekend. His particular interest is minimally invasive and hybrid surgery for both congenital and acquired heart disease, as well as interventional imaging methods. He has spoken across the world on a variety of cardiology topics and has taught practical surgery skills in Europe, the USA, and Asia.
His teaching reaches beyond the classroom, too. Together with Jose Novo Matos, Kieran is co-host and producer of The Animal Heartbeat, a podcast dedicated to veterinary cardiology. It has been downloaded over 85,000 times across 170 territories and is free wherever you get your podcasts.
Conclusion
Two days, one method, and a final case challenge to try it on. If you read ECGs in your practice, this weekend is built to make that reading more systematic, and to connect what you see on the trace with what you do next.
